John 5:6–9 (NKJV) “6 When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he already had been in that condition a long time, He said to him, “Do you want to be made well?” 7 The sick man answered Him, “Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; but while I am coming, another steps down before me.” 8 Jesus said to him, “Rise, take up your bed and walk.” 9 And immediately the man was made well, took up his bed, and walked. And that day was the Sabbath.”
This man had been a paralytic for 38 years. I can only imagine this wasn’t the first time this paralytic man had been seen at the pool of Bethesda. Jesus approached him and asked him a simple question. Do you want to be made well? Although it’s a simple question, the answer was rather complicated. Rather than saying yes, he offers an excuse for not being able to enter into the pool when the water is stirred. Yet Jesus still says, rise take up your bed and walk. And the paralytic man begins to walk for the first time in 38 years.
The question is why did it take so long for this man to be healed? Why did he have to wait for 38 years to be healed? We’re not quite sure, but we do know that because he was paralyzed for 38 years, that when he was healed, God received the glory. You see, no one could say that it was a fluke; he would have gotten better anyway. No one could say, it was a 24 hour bug and he probably took some medicine that made him feel better so that he could walk again. Rather when this man was healed, no amount of rational or logical explanation sufficed, it was clearly a miracle from God. Sometimes, God allows us to be in need of healing so that He will be glorified when we are healed.
You may feel that you have been struggling with an ailment or sickness for years and there is no hope. I’m sure this paralytic man felt the same way. In fact, rather than tell Jesus, “YES, I want to be healed!!!” he offers an excuse of why he can’t be healed. He was without hope. But that didn’t stop Jesus from healing this man. Time is not a limiting factor for Jesus our God and Savior. It doesn’t matter whether an ailment is 5 seconds old, 5 days old or 50 years old, Jesus is still able to heal. While we don’t quite understand why God allows us to struggle with ailments for long period of times, when we are in ailment, we can be like Paul knowing that God’s grace is sufficient for us.
Furthermore, as Christians, we have hope the world does not have. In heaven, we are never going to know pain. Revelation 21:4 (NKJV) “4 And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.”” How many of us are saying AMEN As we read this!!! Also we have hope for heaven will bear a tree that provides healing for us. Revelation 22:2 (NKJV) “2 In the middle of its street, and on either side of the river, was the tree of life, which bore twelve fruits, each tree yielding its fruit every month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.”
No matter our ailments, let’s put our hope in Jesus for we will all receive healing when we are with Him in heaven.
