John 4:24 (NKJV) “24 God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.

This verse was in reply to the woman at the well who was confused if God should be worshipped in Jerusalem or on the mountain near the city of Sychar where Abraham called upon the name of the Lord.

Worship is something that God designed in us. Deuteronomy 4:19 (NKJV) “19 And take heed, lest you lift your eyes to heaven, and when you see the sun, the moon, and the stars, all the host of heaven, you feel driven to worship them and serve them, which the Lord your God has given to all the peoples under the whole heaven as a heritage.” We are driven to worship.

Unfortunately, we are often driven to worship the creation rather than the creator. In the book of Revelation (22.9), John bows down to the angel showing him the future to which the angel replies, do not do that for I am your fellow servant…worship God. One of the 10 plagues Moses brought upon the Egyptians was to bring darkness over the land thus showing the power of God over the false God Ra who was worshipped for providing light on the earth. Rather than worship creation, God desires to be worshipped.

Even the first two commandments of the 10 commandments tell us that we are to worship God alone and that we are not to make idols unto God. God is very particular in how He desires to be worshipped. In fact, God doesn’t want us worshipping idols carved in His likeness, He wants to be worshipped in spirit and truth.

In Spirit meaning the worship of God is not limited to a geographical location such as Jerusalem or Shechem or Norco, California or any other location. We are free to worship God wherever we are throughout the world.

In Truth meaning that we are not giving lip service to God in worship, but that we are sincere or truthful in our worship to God.

Let’s consider John 4:23, (NKJV) “23 But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him.”

God is seeking true worshippers regardless if we are Jews or Gentiles. God is seeking those who will worship Him in spirit and in truth! So let’s have Koinonia fellowship and worship the Lord in spirit and in truth together!
