The Importance of the Cross

Mark 15:29–30 (NKJV) “29 And those who passed by blasphemed Him, wagging their heads and saying, “Aha! You who destroy the temple and build it in three days, 30 save Yourself, and come down from the cross!””

Those who reject Jesus Christ do not see the necessity of the cross. Here at the crucifixion of Jesus, people were blaspheming Him, they were wagging their heads side to side in that classic you’re a disappointment type of look and then they mock Jesus and tell Him to come down from the cross. What they didn’t understand is the importance of the cross.

How can they? 1 Corinthians 2:14 (NKJV) tells us, “14 But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.” So those who reject the truth of Jesus Christ are spiritually blind and cannot understand why Jesus had to die on the cross.

For those who have received Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior, the importance of the cross becomes so clear.

The cross represents the Power of God. 1 Corinthians 1:18 (NKJV) says, “18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.” Through the cross of Christ, we see the power of God at work in our lives and our brothers and sisters in Christ.

The cross represents Peace with God. Colossians 1:20 (NKJV) says, “20 and by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him, whether things on earth or things in heaven, having made peace through the blood of His cross.”

The cross represents the Forgiveness of God. Colossians 2:14 (NKJV) says, “14 having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.”

The cross represents the Sacrifice of God for us to follow. Luke 9:23 (NKJV) says, “23 Then He said to them all, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.”

No wonder the world doesn’t get it. They don’t want anything to do with God, yet for the Christian, the cross is of the utmost importance to us. It was by the cross, our Savior sacrificed His life in order for us to have eternal life through faith in Him!
