Words…

James 3:10–12 (NKJV) “10 Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so. 11 Does a spring send forth fresh water and bitter from the same opening? 12 Can a fig tree, my brethren, bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Thus no spring yields both salt water and fresh.”

The words we speak can have a significant impact on others. It is through our words, that we can both lift people up and tear them down. That is why it is so important for us to be consistent in our speech.

When we are careless about our speech, we misrepresent our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. James 1:26 (NKJV) “26 If anyone among you thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this one’s religion is useless.”

Furthermore, our tongue has the ability to stain who we are as James also states in James 3:6 (NKJV) “6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles (stains) the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell.

But as Christians, being consistent with our speech reflects our relationship with Jesus Christ. Colossians 4:6 (NKJV) says, “6 Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.” When you have experienced the grace of Christ in your life, you can share the grace of Christ in your words. And when we do, our words are like seasoning to the hearer making what we have to say that much more precious.

Let’s consider some of the words Jesus chose to use.

To the woman accused of adultery (caught in sin) Jesus said, John 8:10–11 (NKJV) “10 …“Woman, where are those accusers of yours? Has no one condemned you?” 11 She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said to her, “Neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more.””

John 3:16–17 (NKJV) “16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.”

Truly these are the words of Grace to our lives. How precious are these life giving words we have received from Jesus Christ. What a blessing and a testimony of our Savior!

Let’s continue to speak the words of Grace for in receving the Grace of Christ in our lives, it is only natural for us to give out what we have received.

1 Peter 3:10 (NKJV) “10 For “He who would love life And see good days, Let him refrain his tongue from evil, And his lips from speaking deceit.
